Care Certificate – Understanding the 16 Standards

The Care Certificate is delivered through our online Learning Management System (LMS), which records and evidences the knowledge required for each of the 16 standards. Alongside the online learning, structured workbooks provide guidance on what aspects of every Care Certificate standard should be demonstrated within the workplace. This approach supports a clear and organised method for completing the Care Certificate within health and social care settings.

Care Certificate – Understanding the 16 Standards

How It Works

Step 1: Learning and Knowledge Development

Learners are enrolled onto the Care Certificate programme through the Learning Management System (LMS). They receive login details by email and can begin accessing the learning materials for each standard. The content includes videos, presentations, downloadable resources and knowledge checks. Multiple choice assessments help confirm understanding of the required topics.

Step 2: Work Based Observations

Each learning standard includes a downloadable and editable work pack. These workbooks contain questions and guidance outlining what elements of the Care Certificate must be observed in practice. Supervisors assess workplace performance to ensure the required knowledge and skills are demonstrated appropriately.

Step 3: Completion of the Care Certificate

Once all 16 standards and associated work packs have been completed and assessed, the learner’s Care Certificate portfolio can be finalised. This confirms that the individual has met the recognised induction standards expected within health and social care roles.

Care Certificate Course - 16 Standards Frequently Asked Questions
The 2025 Care Certificate standards are a revised set of 16 training and assessment criteria designed to ensure new health and adult social care workers deliver safe, compassionate, and competent care. They form a key part of staff induction and must be completed by anyone new to care roles.
The Care Certificate is aimed at healthcare support workers, care assistants, and anyone providing direct care in regulated settings. Employers may also require experienced staff, temporary workers, or returning carers to complete the certificate, depending on role requirements.
Key updates include clearer language, stronger integration of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), enhanced safeguarding guidance, emphasis on digital skills, and alignment with new legislation such as the Health and Care Act 2022. Standard 16 now includes learning disability and autism awareness training, referencing the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training.
No. The Care Certificate complements—but does not replace—statutory and mandatory training. Employers still need to provide additional workplace-specific training and supervision to meet full compliance requirements.
Yes, employers may outsource training, supervision, or assessments to a trusted learning provider. However, the final responsibility for quality assurance and certificate sign-off remains with the employer, not the external provider.
If all standards and their assessments are not successfully completed, the full Care Certificate cannot be awarded. Employers may issue a record of partial completion, but must not use the official Care Certificate logo in such cases.
It depends on their current role and knowledge. Employers should use a self-assessment tool to review the worker's existing qualifications and identify any gaps. If required, refresher training or full completion of the updated Care Certificate may be necessary.
Yes, many Care Certificate courses — including those offered by Learning Connect — are CPD (Continuing Professional Development) accredited. This means the training meets professional standards for ongoing learning and development, and the certificate can be used as evidence of structured training for compliance and career progression.
